Healthcare incident response: establish an incident owner

Illustrative situation

Several suppliers join a fault investigation and each assumes another is coordinating it. Updates conflict and key decisions are not recorded.

The decision

Assign one incident coordinator while keeping technical responsibility with the appropriate teams. Record decisions, current impact and the next update time in one place.

Rehearse this before accepting the change

Rehearse a multi-supplier outage and ask each participant who owns coordination, the next action and the next stakeholder update.

Use fictional examples and an authorised test environment. Record what happened, the evidence you inspected and any issue that still needs a responsible owner.

Choose a useful measure

Track incidents with a named coordinator and a current next-action record.

Agree the definition and baseline with the team doing the work. Review the result over a comparable period and note other changes that could affect it.

Healthcare website maintenance with infrastructure, a status panel, tools and an operational checklist.
Monitor the useful journey, not just whether a server responds.
Healthcare backup and recovery illustrated by storage copies, an archive folder and a restoration route.
Test whether a backup can restore a usable service.
Healthcare digital support handover with an inventory, key, incident timeline and dependency map.
Keep responsibilities and recovery instructions available.

Your planning worksheet

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
