Make dialog close controls easy to find and activate

A tiny cross in a panel corner can be hard to see, press or identify with assistive technology. Visitors may feel trapped even when a close action technically exists.

What to change

Ask for a clear, sufficiently usable dismissal control whose purpose is understandable through visual and nonvisual interaction.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A visitor can reach a labelled Close action at the start of a help dialog, dismiss it and return to the original page.

How to check the result

Accept when dismissal is readily discoverable and operable across the supported screen sizes and input methods.

A mistake to avoid

A large invisible click area around the cross can accidentally cover nearby heading links or the dialog's first interactive control.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
