Make leaving an unfinished form a deliberate choice

A prominent Cancel action can discard several screens of work immediately. Conversely, a vague warning can trap visitors who deliberately want to leave the task.

What to change

Request a clear cancellation interaction proportionate to the amount of unsaved work, with understandable choices to continue editing or leave.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A visitor halfway through a long request sees options to Continue editing or Discard this request. Continuing restores the exact section they were using.

How to check the result

Accept when both choices behave as described and accidental activation does not silently destroy substantial unfinished work.

A mistake to avoid

Do not display a disruptive warning on every ordinary page change if no meaningful unsaved work exists.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
