Every new guide canonicalises to the homepage

A template default inserts the homepage as the canonical for all new articles. Distinct guides therefore declare themselves alternatives to the wrong page.

What to change

The canonical should describe the intended identity of that particular page. If a default points every article home, ask the supplier to derive it from the approved route and validate it during publication. Use two unrelated guides as an acceptance pair: each should keep its own correct address. This identifies a shared-template failure without asking editors to manually repair hundreds of generated pages individually.

A worked example

Illustrative example

Illustrative test: Publish two test guides with different routes and inspect their output.

How to check the result

Each distinct guide references its own approved route unless a documented duplicate relationship applies.

A mistake to avoid

A canonical is not a general link to the organisation's main website.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
