Let people enter their actual names

Overly restrictive name fields can reject apostrophes, spaces, accents or longer names. Visitors may alter their identity simply to get past a website's arbitrary input rule.

What to change

Ask for name entry rules based on a documented operational need, with no unexplained requirement to use a narrow set of characters.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A visitor with a multiword family name enters it in one family-name field. The review screen retains the full spelling and all spaces.

How to check the result

Accept when the agreed character examples display consistently from entry to confirmation, with a useful explanation for any unavoidable length limit.

A mistake to avoid

Replacing unfamiliar characters behind the scenes can produce a clean-looking confirmation while creating an inaccurate record elsewhere.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
