Accept usable telephone numbers without fragile formatting

A telephone field may reject spaces, a leading plus sign or pasted formatting. The visitor sees a failure even though reception could use the number without difficulty.

What to change

Agree the formats the practice needs to accept, then ask the supplier to separate helpful presentation from unnecessary restrictions on entry.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A visitor pastes a number beginning with a plus sign and spaces. The form accepts it and presents a readable version for checking before submission.

How to check the result

Accept when agreed valid examples survive typing, pasting, correction and transfer, and rejected examples receive a specific explanation.

A mistake to avoid

Do not treat a successful browser submission as proof that the receiving system preserved the complete number.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
