Make a selected option recognisable without colour

A choice can appear selected only through a change from one brand colour to another. Visitors may be unable to tell which option will be used.

What to change

Ask the supplier to pair colour with a clear selected marker or equivalent visible state and an accurate accessible state.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A selected branch card includes an obvious selection marker as well as its background treatment. Returning to the chooser still identifies the same branch.

How to check the result

Accept when only the intended option is shown as selected and that state can be understood without distinguishing brand colours.

A mistake to avoid

A decorative tick repeated on every card can look reassuring while providing no actual indication of selection.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
