The decision
State what the reader should understand after seeing the illustration. Decide whether a diagram, annotated image or simple text would serve that purpose best.
Rehearse this before accepting the change
Hide the surrounding paragraph and ask what the illustration communicates.
Use fictional examples and an authorised test environment. Record what happened, the evidence you inspected and any issue that still needs a responsible owner.
Choose a useful measure
Count elements that confuse the intended explanation.
Agree the definition and baseline with the team doing the work. Review the result over a comparable period and note other changes that could affect it.
