A redirect breaks a deep bookmarked section

A retired guide points to its replacement, but a bookmarked section no longer exists. Visitors land far from the needed explanation.

What to change

A saved section link describes a more precise destination than the article itself. Identify important incoming fragments from materials the organisation controls, then compare them with the replacement page structure. A compatibility anchor may preserve that intent without recreating obsolete copy. Ask for evidence showing the final section position and heading, because a successful page response cannot demonstrate that the reader reached the explanation they expected.

A worked example

How to check the result

The visitor reaches a relevant section or a clear equivalent location.

A mistake to avoid

Testing only the base URL misses the lost section context.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
