Keep fixed controls clear of phone screen edges

A fixed action bar can sit against a phone's gesture area or curved screen edge. Its lower controls may be hard to press or partly hidden by device furniture.

What to change

Ask the supplier to test fixed elements on actual phones and reserve usable space around device-specific screen edges.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A fixed Contact action remains above the phone's bottom gesture area and does not overlap the page's final link or consent control.

How to check the result

Accept when fixed actions remain visible, individually operable and separated from both page content and device interaction areas.

A mistake to avoid

Adding a fixed margin based on one handset can leave the same control obstructed on another device or orientation.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
