Make the skip link land at usable main content

A skip link can appear to work because the page scrolls, yet keyboard focus remains in the header. The next Tab press then resumes the same long navigation.

What to change

Ask the supplier to make the skip action bypass repeated navigation for both reading position and subsequent keyboard interaction.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A visitor skips the main menu and reaches the service heading. Their next keyboard action goes to the service's own navigation or first relevant control.

How to check the result

Accept when the skip route reliably bypasses repeated elements and provides a visible, understandable starting point in the content.

A mistake to avoid

Merely matching the skip link to an element name does not prove that the browser's keyboard focus moved correctly.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
