Keep captions clear of player controls and overlays

Captions can sit beneath playback controls, branding or a persistent call-to-action overlay. The visitor enables them but cannot read complete lines at the moments they are needed.

What to change

Ask the supplier to review the actual caption presentation across player states and screen sizes.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A two-line caption remains readable above the player controls when the visitor pauses to review it on a small screen.

How to check the result

Accept when captions can be read throughout ordinary playback, pause and fullscreen states without conflicting with necessary controls.

A mistake to avoid

Moving captions higher for one clip can cover meaningful visual information, so test the actual media and available presentation options.

Your action checklist

Use these checks to prepare a discussion with your team or supplier. Tick a check when you have recorded the decision or evidence, rather than when a feature has simply been promised.
